Igael Tumarkin Israeli Oil Painting Art Jewish Judaica Israel Jerusalem Antiques
Igael Tumarkin is one of Israel’s foremost artists. Having experienced the Holocaust firsthand, Tumarkin’s art reflects a sense of brutalism. In a Museum of Modern Art publication called “Art Israel” published in 1964, Igael Tumarkin states on page 75 It does not matter where the artistic fact starts–with bronze, canvas, rubbish… What matters is to create a new reality — to create order out of disorder. What matters is to break with the conventional and literal meaning and use of objects. A pagan uses a nail, a tooth, for its instrinsic beauty or magic force, for its elemental value. The painting is oil, mixed media on plywood. The plywood is thick and therefore the painting is fairly heavy. It is truly one of Tumarkin’s finest works of art and has his classic red and green with the central object being the white burned newspaper which one can see the type is Hebrew and not English. How he managed to reproduce the central object of the painting in mixed media, is truly amazing. The painting almost looks as though it is 3D. The central object is not a real newspaper. Then as he often does, he signed the painting first in red and then went over his signature in white creating his signature style. The label on the back of the painting is the provenance of this painting. Tumarkin spent various times in New York and this was most probably painted in America rather than in Israel. The dimensions of the painting are 32 3/4″ high with frame and 27 1/4″ wide. The image measures 25″ high and 19 1/2″ wide. Guaranteed authentic and reasonably priced.
