Barbara BayLa Cohen was born in Brooklyn, New York. Painting since early childhood BayLa has devoted her life to her family and her art. The sun, people, birds, animals and flora reflect experiences deep in my thoughts. My desire is to evoke memories and feelings in the heart of the viewer. I want to bring joy and expand the imagination. The color, texture, light and the miracles of nature give me a never-ending theme, as to conquer in a lifetime. My works of art are very personal, and each one tells a story. BayLa majored in art at Prospect Heights High School in Brooklyn, New York, where she specialized in flower painting and textile design. At the same time she studied at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. By the time she graduated, she had won two national awards, had her work in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and was awarded a full scholarship to Manhattan’s prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology and Design F. BayLa majored in textile design, and minored in fine art. During this time she free-lanced as a designer creating original high style fashion for silks, scarves, ties upholstery and advertising promotionals. She graduated from F. With honors and a front-page recognition in the New York Times. BayLa’s career in New York resulted in BayLa becoming a successful designer and an artist very much in demand in the fields of advertising, fashion illustration and textile design. She also applied her gifts to the creation of high visibility murals and other art expressions. BayLa and her husband moved their family to Mission Viejo, California, in 1964, where she was a founding member of the Mission Viejo Artists and Craftsman’s Association (1965), and successfully gave private lessons to children and adults, 1966 to 1973. Over the next 30 years, BayLa concentrated exclusively on fine art. Her works were exhibited in many outstanding Southern California galleries, The Laguna Beach Sawdust Festivals and Artistes de la Rue, Monte Verde Young, Beverly Hills. Additionally, her reproductions have been distributed around the world. BayLa and her husband, Harry, relocated to Oro Valley, Arizona, near Tucson, in 1995. The move ignited a new burst of creativity. The amazing beauty and uniqueness of the desert and the people of the southwest opened new gates of opportunity to explore amazing new subject matter. The desire to paint is never ending. I have focused on watercolors, acrylics and oils, and my imagination has worked overtime with more ideas than I complete in a lifetime. My work comes from within my soul, and the spirit of my imagination. Arizona has allowed me to reveal my most creative self. El Presidio Gallery has hosted six exhibits of her work between 1996 to 2003. She was juried, and accepted at The Mountain Oyster Club two consecutive years. Guest artist at Galleria Tubac last three years. Watercolor demonstrations at Jane Hamilton Fine Art, Bisbee, AZ. Exhibit and Show at Temple Beth El, Beverly Hills, CA. Annual contributor to Tohono Chul Wildflower Show. Private exhibitor at Arizona Cancer Center, Celebrate Art, 2000, 2001, 2002.
