ABEL PANN Pastel Judaica Painting Jewish Man Israeli Artist Bezalel Jerusalem
ABEL PANN Pastel Judaica Painting Jewish Man Israeli Artist Bezalel Jerusalem. Original Signed Early 20th Century Pastel Portrait of a Yemenite Jewish Man by Listed Latvian/Israeli Artist Abel Pann. See images below the description. Offered in this listing is a. Pann was born Abel Pfeffermann in Latvia. He studied under Yehuda Pen of Vitebsk, Belarus, who also was Marc Chagall’s teacher. After studying at the Fine Arts Academy in Odessa, in 1903 Pann moved to Paris. He lived in La Ruche, a Parisian building in which such other Jewish artists as Chaim Soutine, Chagall, and Modigliani lived. In 1913, Abel Pann settled in Jerusalem, where he headed the paintings department at Bezalel under Boris Schatz. Some of Pann’s most noted works depict scenes from the Hebrew Bible. The subject of this work appears to be a Yemenite man. Signed “Abel Pann” in the lower right corner. The work measures approximately 18 7/8 x 13 7/8 inches to the very heavy, thick mat. The overall framed size is 26 5/8 x 20 1/4 inches. The work is fresh to the market from an old Chicago-area collection. CONDITION: The pastel has not been examined out of the frame. The paper is dark, and I cannot tell whether it has been laid down. There is a short tear about 5/8′ long in the man’s chest, pointed out with a pen. Otherwise, I do not see any other holes, tears, or other problems of note. The frame is quite old and looks okay, though there is wear along the top that could use some retouch. Please disregard any glare that may be present in the images. Ships to locations within the U. International Buyers – Please Note. Listing and template services provided by inkFrog.
